In-School Programs
The In-School Concerts Program offers elementary students an "up close and personal" concert and workshop experience. Through informal classroom performances by string ensembles from the KSO, the program serves young people in schools throughout the Knoxville area from September through May each year. The KSO has presented In-School Concerts in Blount, Anderson, Sevier, Loudon, Jefferson, and Knox counties, as well as at other sites throughout the 16-county East Tennessee region. KSO ensembles have also traveled to sites in Southeastern Kentucky and Southwestern Virginia to present In-School Concerts.
These presentations are created for young audiences new to classical music. The KSO musicians go directly into school classrooms and auditoriums and perform brief, recognizable pieces of classical music. The performance is accompanied by a general introduction to orchestra instruments and symphony music, laying a firm foundation for music appreciation. The KSO performers also involve the kids in a lively hands-on discussion about the specific instruments of the visiting ensemble - the instruments' histories, basic playing concepts, and so on.
In-School Concerts are the cornerstone of the KSO's Music Education Program, an important first step and, for some students, the only experience in music appreciation. They are a real "alternative" music experience for young people! In-School Concerts are made possible by a grant from Target.
