Aram Demirjian, conductor

William Shaub, violin

WORKS INCLUDE:

MAURICE RAVEL, La Valse

SAMUEL BARBER, Violin Concerto

CARLOS SIMON, The Block

OTTORINO RESPIGHI, Pines of Rome

Two symphonic staples from the 1920s by Ravel and Respighi bookend this program that is bursting with musical colors. Concertmaster William Shaub performs Samuel Barber’s heartfelt Violin Concerto, and the KSO performs the Tennessee premiere of Petrichor by East Tennessee native and Pulitzer Prize-winning composer Ellen Reid.

Why You Will Love This Program:

  • Symphonic Surround Sound: Pines of Rome calls for musicians to be positioned out among the audience, so the sound truly will embrace you!
  • The first time KSO Music Director Aram Demirjian ever heard William Shaub play, he thought, “He has the perfect sound for Barber’s Violin Concerto.” Now we all get to hear it.
  • Art inspires art: Carlos Simon’s The Block is a short orchestral study of six paintings by Romare Bearden highlighting different buildings (church, barbershop, nightclub, etc.) on one Harlem block.

Musical Tasting Menu:

    • Merriam Webster defines “petrichor” as “a distinctive, earthy, usually pleasant odor that is associated with rainfall especially when following a warm, dry period.” Listen to a sample of how Reid realizes that concept here:

  • There is nothing quite as exhilarating as experiencing the finale of Pines of Rome in person, but for now…get pumped!
