The Knoxville Symphony Youth Ensembles bring together young musicians each year to learn, rehearse, and perform in a supportive, high-level musical environment. The program includes the Youth Orchestras, Youth Choir, Youth Wind Ensemble, and Youth Chamber Music Program, offering opportunities for students across a wide range of instruments, levels, and musical interests.
The KSO’s commitment to youth music education began more than 50 years ago with the creation of the Knoxville Symphony Youth Orchestra, now in its 52nd season. Over time, the success of the Youth Orchestra inspired the development of additional ensembles, allowing the program to serve more students and provide a broader pathway for musical growth.
Knoxville Symphony Youth Orchestra (KSYO)
A structured, multi-level orchestral program featuring six ensembles:
From beginning musicians to highly advanced pre-college players, each orchestra provides age-appropriate repertoire, technique development, ensemble training, and mentorship from professional faculty. The Youth Orchestra program remains the foundation of the KSO’s commitment to training the next generation of orchestral musicians.
Knoxville Symphony Youth Choir
A vibrant vocal ensemble offering students the opportunity to build musicianship, develop vocal technique, and perform in collaboration with peers and professional musicians.
Knoxville Symphony Youth Wind Ensemble
A premier ensemble for woodwind, brass, and percussion students seeking advanced repertoire, ensemble experience, and skill refinement under professional direction.
Knoxville Symphony Chamber Music Program
Small-ensemble coaching for motivated students ready to explore chamber literature, refine listening skills, and develop musical independence.
Every ensemble is led by dedicated professional musicians and educators. Their expertise, mentorship, and passion for teaching create a supportive environment where students can grow as performers, collaborators, and leaders.
Alumni of the KSO Youth Ensembles go on to pursue studies in music, science, engineering, education, medicine, and more. Regardless of their path, the discipline, creativity, teamwork, and confidence gained through ensemble participation stay with them for life. The Knoxville Symphony Youth Ensembles are a testament to the power of music to shape young people, building not only strong musicians, but strong community members.
