YMOF Scholarship

Investing in the Future of Music

The Knoxville Symphony Youth Ensembles (KSYE) provide invaluable opportunities for young musicians across East Tennessee to rehearse, practice, and perform together. These ensembles — including our Youth Orchestras, Youth Choirs, Wind Ensemble, and Chamber Music Program — help students develop the artistry, discipline, and creativity that extend far beyond music.

To ensure every talented student has the chance to grow, the Knoxville Symphony Orchestra established the Young Musician Opportunity Fund Scholarship. This permanent endowment supports student musicians as they pursue transformative summer learning experiences — from prestigious music festivals and camps to one-on-one lessons with world-renowned faculty.

How the Scholarship Can Be Used

Scholarship funds may be applied toward:

  • Tuition for summer music festivals, camps, or workshops.
  • Travel and lodging associated with those experiences.
  • Private lessons or masterclasses with professional musicians or professors.

Student Impact Stories

The Knoxville Symphony Youth Orchestra’s 50th anniversary inspired the creation of the Young Musician Opportunity Fund, a permanent endowment that helps talented KSYO musicians attend summer camps, festivals, and workshops. Here’s what some recent scholarship recipients said about their experiences:

“It was such an enriching experience that I’ll remember and treasure for years to come. I definitely got better at sight reading, and my practice now is more productive and focused than it was before. I have a greater passion and focus in my musicianship. I also hope I can encourage others to develop their musicianship and attend summer programs, as they have been very beneficial for both my mindset and playing.” – Julia, viola, on attending the Sewanee Summer Music Festival.

“It allowed me to expand my orchestral playing. This program has inspired me to want to pursue music to a larger extent. I learned better practice techniques, better orchestral styles and ideas, and overall how to be a better musician. I’m never going to forget the memories I made there.-Gabriella, trumpet, on attending the Brevard Music Center Summer Institute.

“One of my favorite moments was playing Strange Humors by John Mackey. It was like nothing I’d ever played before — it truly put me out of my comfort zone. I could not be where I am musically and emotionally without this opportunity. My entire life changed — and without the YMOF support, it wouldn’t have happened.” – Nick, bassoon, on attending the Tennessee Governor’s School for the Arts.
